For the first week of 2013, the Long-term Value Portfolio surged forward by 5.9%, ahead of market's gain of 4.8% over the same time period. This is reflected in the price chart below with the blue line being the Long-term value portfolio and the S&P 500 and NASDAQ by the green and brown lines, respectively.
The gain on the week was the result of outsized gains in the consumer discretionary stocks and materials companies, primarily Krispy Kreme, Viacom, Walter Energy and Allegheny Technologies. Year-to-date, the portfolio has 3.8% and was ahead of the market's return by 100 basis points. Since inception, the portfolio has gained more than 11%, a full 340 basis point ahead of the market's price gain.
