I believe that it has been beaten into our heads that coal is dirty, polluting, that natural gas will eat the solid form of carbon's lunch, and that coal's days are numbered. Then we get the below report form the World Resource Institute describing detailing the following.....
- According to WRI’s estimates, 1,199 new coal-fired plants, with a total installed capacity of 1,401,278 megawatts (MW), are being proposed globally. These projects are spread across 59 countries. China and India together account for 76 percent of the proposed new coal power capacities.
- New coal-fired plants have been proposed in 10 developing countries: Cambodia, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Laos, Morocco, Namibia, Oman, Senegal, Sri Lanka, and Uzbekistan. Currently, there is limited or no capacity for domestic coal production in any of these countries.
According to various estimates, 20 to 50 gigawatts of coal-fired power generation is set to retire in the next few years. This is versus the 1,401 gigawatts of installed capacity that is set to come online, or 28x the maximum expected retirement in the US. Where do you think the coal to run these plants will come from? Do you think international coal trade will be all important?
